Albanese 'foolish to appoint assistant minister to republic'

Menzies Research Centre’s Nick Cater says Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was “foolish to appoint an assistant minister for the republic” in his government.

Mr Cater said the appointment “makes it look like” turning Australia into a republic is on his agenda as prime minister.

“I think he was probably amongst many on the republican side of the argument that were looking forward almost ghoulishly to the moment where the Queen would depart this earth,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

Mr Cater said the new King will not be “anything like the unpopular figure” people were predicting he would be.
