As we observe World Adoption Month, we look at the Importance of Adoption

The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng says the tragedy of abandoned newborns continues in the province’s hospitals. According to DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health, Jack Bloom, ONE HUNDRED AND 19 babies were deserted at hospitals in the province last year.

In 2020, ONE-HUNDRED-AND-45 babies were abandoned. Meanwhile, 56 were abandoned from January to August this year alone. The figures were recently disclosed by the Gauteng Health Department in a written reply to questions in the provincial legislature.

As we observe World Adoption Month, let us find out why adoption is important, how the process works and some of the myths associated with adoption.

We are joined by Thabitha Dolamo who is the founder of "Baby and I", an organisation which encourages adoption and educates communities about the importance of adoption.

We are also joined by Kgomotso Mgiba, a mother who has given up her baby for adoption. Telephonically, we are joined by Dr Tebogo Mabe, the Director of Adoptions and International Services at the Department of Social Development.
