Association for the Aged launch a national helpline to fight elder abuse

The Association for the Aged has launched a national helpline to fight elder abuse. The association says the 24-hour service will provide confidential, caring and free counselling, as well as referral services. It added that the initiative will also foster a partnership with the social development department and the police. A 2020 study by the University of Cape Town found that only 4%of the elder abuse cases are reported to authorities in South Africa. The data suggests that elder abuse is prevalent, and can often be fatal.
