Located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world. It has a rich legend linked to the Pandavas, the heroes of the Mahabharata epic. Now, a study by the archaeological survey of India has reportedly revealed that the temple is tilting by 6 to 10 degrees. As per reports, officials have not ruled out the possibility of subsidence, owing to which the alignment of the temple may shift. Land subsidence is a gradual settling or sudden sinking of the earth’s surface. It is most often caused by the removal of water, oil, natural gas, or mineral resources out of the ground by pumping, fracking, or mining activities. Located at an altitude of over 12,000 feet and just below the peak of Chandrashila, the temple is believed to be more than 3,000 years old. During winter, the temple is closed, and the symbolic image of the deity and the temple priests are moved 19 kilometres from the main temple.
