Familiar scenes of protest and destruction on the streets of Gauteng this past week. While the community was inflamed over illegal mining and poor policing in Kagiso on the west rand, and one was killed, in the east rand community of Tembisa, rioting and protests left four dead and infrastructure destroyed. Residents there were up in arms over electricity tariffs. The loss of life and infrastructure could have been avoided says the Southern African Institute for Responsive and Accountable Governance.
