U.S. House speaker Pelosi on her way out

On Thursday, Nancy Pelosi – the first and only Speaker of the House of Representatives in United States history – announced she would not seek a leadership role when the next Congress is seated next year.

The Democratic lawmaker’s decision follows the Republican Party clinching a slim majority in the House following the midterm elections.

When her current tenure ends in the New Year, she will have served as Speaker through four administrations – two Republicans and two Democrats – with President Joe Biden saying in a statement that history will note Pelosi as the most consequential Speaker.
